Steps to Becoming a Sheriff
STEP 1
Graduate from High School. The first step toward a career as a sheriff is obtaining a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
STEP 2
Complete Police or Sheriff Academy.
STEP 3
Gain Law Enforcement Experience.
STEP 4
Consider Higher Education.
STEP 5
Apply to a Sheriff's Office.
No person shall be elected to the office of sheriff unless he has attained the age of twenty-one (21) years at the time of election, is a citizen of the United States and shall have resided within the county one (1) year next preceding his election.
